This was released simultaneously with In The Village Of The Apple Sun. Village had a certain "spore-print spiritual glue" holding it together and that album was very specific about which songs were meant for it. I was writing so much material and recording every note. Songs that were too paranoid or just didn't belong on Village were shoved into the bag that became Drug Free.

I didn't realise at first that Drug Free was a solid record in its own right, but Simon Felton offered to release it on Pink Hedgehog and that helped me see the record in a brighter light. Stewart Lee gave it a rave review in the Sunday Times and suddenly DF was Pink Hedgehog's top selling album.

"In A Boat On The Sea" came from a wannabe-krautrock-collective recording session in a Sacrament basement studio. All I wanted to was to blow off steam with a bunch of people after completing Village, which was ultimately a very solitary record to make. I didn't care if we recorded only rubbish in the basement, but as soon as "Boat" got underway, I knew we were capturing magic. If nothing else, Drug Free is the proud home to one of my fav Ant anythings...
