about

I was reaching the end of my days playing Cafe Milazzo. I started out there playing regular rock gigs with band and from there was offered the "dinner music" gig on Tuesdays. I'd bring my guitar and set up facing the diners. They'd ignore me, I'd take a break, eat dinner, then do another set. I got tired of bringing my gear every week and switched to all-piano-songs sets. It actually felt like doing proper songs was, well, rude. Everyone would feel obliged to pause from their pasta, look up and barely applaud every three or four minutes. Finally, I stopped setting up a microphone, and just did improvised instrumental piano music. I'd drive to the cafe, get stoned in my van, then sit down and noodle for 45 minutes. The best was an experiment in Eno-ism where I started with the highest note on the keyboard and - very slowly - worked my way down to the lowest, over the course of an hour. Finally, when I let off of the sustain pedal, the dinner crowd looked up, smattered their deaf approval and then went back to eating. I quit that gig two weeks later. This song was improvised one night when I could still be bothered to sing!
